This means successful running depends not only on aerobic fitness, but also on muscular strength, tendon capacity, coordination, and load tolerance.
Step 1: Build a Base Level of Physical Preparedness
Before beginning a running program, it helps to have a foundation of general physical capacity.
This does not mean you need to be highly fit — but certain baseline qualities make running safer and more manageable.
Important areas include:
Lower Limb Strength
Running involves repeated loading through:
- Calves
- Quadriceps
- Glutes
- Hamstrings
Adequate strength helps absorb force and reduce excessive stress on joints and tendons.
Single-Leg Stability
Running is essentially a series of controlled single-leg landings.

Signs You May Be Progressing Too Quickly
Some muscle soreness and fatigue can be normal when starting.
However, progression may need adjusting if you experience:
- Pain that worsens during running
- Symptoms persisting beyond 24–48 hours
- Sharp or localised joint/tendon pain
- Declining performance or excessive fatigue
- Persistent soreness after every session
Running adaptation should feel challenging, but manageable.

- Gradual exposure to load
