Postpartum Recovery: Where’s the Rehab?

July 29, 2025

You tear your ACL and no one questions it, you’ll need 9 to 12 months of structured rehab, guided by a team of professionals. You’ll progress through strength, stability, and return-to-sport protocols. It’s expected. It’s normal. It’s supported. But give birth, whether through caesarean section, a third-degree tear, perineal trauma, or even a straightforward vaginal delivery and you’re discharged with a six-week check and a casual “go slow.” No rehab. No progressive load. No pelvic floor or core retraining. No plan. At The Active Studio, we believe this needs to change.

Birth Is Musculoskeletal Trauma, So Why Don’t We Treat It That Way?

Whether you delivered vaginally or via C-section, your body has undergone significant physical trauma. This can include:

  • Abdominal wall separation (diastasis recti)
  • Pelvic floor injury or tearing
  • Joint laxity and instability
  • Scarring and reduced tissue integrity
  • Changes in posture, core control, and breathing mechanics

Yet, unlike orthopaedic injuries, postpartum women are often left without any structured rehab pathway, just vague advice to “ease back into it.”

Would we say that to someone 6 weeks post-ACL surgery? Of course not.

The Postpartum Body Deserves More Than a Clearance Letter

The standard six-week check-up (often a brief appointment covering mental health, contraception, and wound healing) doesn’t assess function, strength, or return-to-activity readiness. Most women leave this appointment:

  • Unsure if they can lift weights
  • Afraid to run or return to group fitness
  • Experiencing pain, leakage, or pelvic heaviness
  • Without any guidance on rebuilding strength or retraining their core

Postpartum rehab is not about bouncing back, it’s about rebuilding from the inside out.

What Should Postpartum Rehab Include?

At The Active Studio, our Exercise Physiologists specialise in women’s health and postpartum recovery. Just like an ACL rehab program, we believe postpartum care should include:
✅ Thorough Assessment
We look at pelvic floor symptoms, abdominal separation, posture, breathing patterns, muscle imbalances, and functional movement.

✅ Pelvic Floor and Core Retraining
We teach women how to reconnect with their deep stabilising system—not through crunches, but through clinically sound, breath-driven movement.

✅ Progressive Strength and Load Tolerance
From lifting your baby to returning to running, you need structured progression. We rebuild your capacity step-by-step.

✅ Scar and Tissue Management
Whether you’ve had a C-section or perineal tearing, we guide safe movement, mobility, and scar desensitisation techniques.

✅ Education and Empowerment
We don’t just give you exercises, we help you understand your body, your healing timeline, and your long-term goals.

Evidence Supports Structured Postpartum Care

  • Studies show that targeted pelvic floor and core rehab reduces the risk of long-term pelvic dysfunction, including incontinence and prolapse (Dumoulin et al., 2018).
  • C-section recovery can take months to restore core control, trunk stability, and load capacity, not weeks.
  • Women who receive postnatal exercise support report improved confidence, reduced pain, and better long-term function.

“Every woman deserves the same level of care and structure we give to elite athletes rehabbing from injury.”

Let’s Shift the Narrative
Birth is powerful but recovery requires support. You wouldn’t return to sport six weeks after an ACL tear without a plan. So why are women expected to return to life, work, and workouts after birth without one? 💜
