From Deconditioning to Reconditioning: Moving With Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is one of the most misunderstood experiences a person can face. Often invisible to others, it can take a toll on every part of life; physically, emotionally, and socially. One of the most damaging consequences of long-term pain is something known as deconditioning, a gradual decline in strength, fitness, and function that occurs when movement becomes limited or avoided altogether.

At The Active Studio, we see this story play out often: someone who has been living with persistent pain avoids exercise due to fear of making things worse. Unfortunately, that avoidance only adds to the problem.

 

Fear of Movement → Deconditioning → More Pain

When pain persists for months or years, the nervous system becomes more sensitive. Movements that were once easy can feel threatening. This fear leads to activity avoidance. But the less we move, the less our muscles, joints, and cardiovascular system are used—and the harder it becomes to tolerate even basic tasks.

This is the pain-deconditioning cycle:

  • Pain → Avoidance of movement 
  • Avoidance → Loss of strength and fitness 
  • Loss of fitness → Increased pain with smaller loads 
  • Increased pain → More avoidance 

This downward spiral contributes to both physical and psychological distress, a loss of confidence in the body, fear of flare-ups, and a growing sense of helplessness.

 

What Is Reconditioning?

Reconditioning is the antidote to deconditioning. It’s a process of gradually reintroducing movement and strength in a safe, progressive, and individualised way. This doesn’t mean “pushing through pain” or jumping back into exercise all at once. Instead, we use graded exposure, a clinically proven approach that helps desensitise the nervous system and rebuild capacity, one movement at a time.
